My Thoughts
The Murders in the Rue Morgue was the first of three stories featuring the sharp and witty C. Auguste Dupin, who also happens to be the inspiration for almost every detective story ever written. His unbelievable deduction methodology and acumen is second to none as he never seems to struggle when attempting to solve the most impossible of mysteries. My favorite example of this is the very first example. When Dupin continues a conversation that the protagonist was thinking after fifteen minutes of silence. For fifteen minutes Dupin watched facial expressions and deduced the exact thoughts of the protagonist.
More surprising than Dupin's ingenuity is that of Poe's excellent writing skills when it comes to his extremely large variety of genres. Before reading Poe's work, I was under the impression that Poe was strictly a writer of the macabre. His writing skills extend so far and his inspiration through so many genres I was simply amazed. From Jules Verne to Sir Author Conan Doyle he changed to game when it came to literature in general.
My Review
I rate this story a 4 out of 5. I loved the story but I was kind of disappointed about who the killer turned out to be. Everything fell into place perfectly during Dupins final analysis, but I suppose I was craving a different, less far-fetched, conclusion.
